(this is a flashback, a story, okay? Not present day in the book.Intonel's telling it to Parker)
Planet Dorno, 11 years ago
It was another nice day for everyone without fur. Cosh was panting like a dog, but everyone else was content, even Lee and Drake. Intonel and Cosh were sitting under a tree, talking about random things and fantasies. They eventually got up and walked to the playground equipment. When they got to the swings, the other kids walked away. Intonel put one knee on the swing and gripped the chains.
“I wonder what happened?” She asked herself. Cosh felt bad for scaring everyone away from her as well as himself. But he felt better when she said. “Whatever, who cares?” She looked back at him and smiled sweetly in that way she just could. He smiled back and got on the swings. They stayed like that.
But then came Ghani.
They’d known him since they first went to day-care.
“What? You don’t even remember day-care? Ugh… Humans.”
The day-care center and the pre-school were the same room, because of the size of the town.
“Hi, Ghani!” Intonel said enthusiastically. Lee fluttered happily in the air. She jumped off of the swing in the air and landed gracefully. It was her way of impressing people. Cosh had never tried that, so he thought he would, and show Ghani something that he could do. Bracing himself, he jumped off of the swing and tried to land gracefully, also.
But that, of course, did not happen.
He lost his balance and ended up skidding to a halt on his stomach at Ghani’s feet. He looked down at him with distaste. Intonel looked embarrassed, but she helped him up.
“Hey, Intonel…” He said. Intonel blushed. Sean hissed friendlily and smiled. “…Cosh, work on that landing.” Cosh didn’t like Ghani. Ghani didn’t like him. Ghani was mean to him, because he was two years younger, but when he told Intonel, she didn’t believe him. Of course, he was a sweetheart to Intonel, because she was gullible.
“Um, hi, Gha-”
“So, Nelly,” Intonel blushed more at the sound of him using her nickname. “what’re you doing?”
“Oh! Uh… n-not much!” Intonel stuttered.
“Hey, you up for a challenge?” He asked coolly, mischief sparkling in his eyes.
“N-”
“Sure!” Intonel cut Cosh off. He smiled evilly. He always seemed to get his way.
“Okay. Here it is. My sister’s kite got stuck up there,” He pointed to the largest tree in the park. The one with the sharp rock under it. Intonel saw a glint and assumed that was the kite.
Cosh seemed to be the only one who realized the kite was stuck right above the sharp rock.
“Think you can get it down for me?” Intonel’s eyes glinted with fear for an instant. Then with excitement and pride.
“Yeah! Totally!” She said.
“No!” Their heads turned to Cosh. “I mean… I’ll do it!” He swallowed.
Ghani scowled. “What, Cosh? Don’t think your sister can handle climbing a lousy tree to get a kite for her beloved Ghani?”
“If it’s so easy, why don’t you go get it yourself?” Ghani’s eyes glinted with anger.
“Cosh!” Intonel said loudly. “I can handle it! I’m not stupid! And I’ve been climbing trees for weeks!” She and Lee started toward the tree.
“But-” But he stopped when he felt scales around his ankles. He looked down, his eyes wide. Sean was at his feet.
“Yeah, Cosh,” he hissed. “don’t be so, hyssssterical…” He cackled evilly. Cosh was frozen in place. Ghani passed him, chuckling.
“C’mon, Doggy Boy, this’ll be quite a show.” He elbowed Cosh in the ribs and he fell over Sean, who slithered away after Ghani.
“Oh, no…” He breathed to himself. He scrambled to his feet and ran to the tree as fast as he could. Somehow, Ghani had already gotten there before him. Intonel had also already gotten to a high branch. She reached up to grab the kite, which was bright yellow, but something was amiss. Intonel paused to ponder what was so different, and then in hit her…
… just about as fast as the snake’s tail hit her in the stomach. She gave an eep of surprise and tumbled to the ground.
Cosh yelled and ran to catch her, but a hand grabbed the back of his shirt and flung him backwards. He was on his feet and running again in and instant. He knew it was too late, but he still kept running.
Intonel turned in midair and put her hands in front of her face. She landed, none too softly. But there was a twist. She seemed to have fallen quite close to the trunk, so she landed, not only on her face, but on the sharp rock, too. I cut clean through her side. She shrieked in pain and cried. Lee dropped onto her from the air, weak.
“Intonel!” She faintly heard a voice through the growing fog in her mind.
“Intonel!” Cosh yelled again. He looked back to glare at Ghani, but he had disappeared. He picked up Intonel and started to run home, making sure Lee was safely tucked into the crook on Intonel’s arm, and that the other arm was over the deep wound.
The last thing Intonel was before darkness engulfed her was Cosh’s worried face.
There! I hope ye all liked it!!as I said, this was a story Intonel was telling to one of the humans to explain how she got her scar!
